Through his varied background, John
is ideally suited to pursue or to defend appeals. Now a sole
practitioner and a law professor of appellate advocacy and other
subjects, John has also practiced at both large and small law
firms in North Carolina. Most recently, John practiced at a small
firm for four years, primarily representing individuals and
plaintiffs. Before that, he practiced at a large firm for seven
years, mostly representing corporate defendants. John’s appellate
qualifications include:
- Associate Professor at Wake
Forest University School of Law,
teaching Appellate Advocacy and
other subjects
- Active in North Carolina Academy
of Trial Lawyers, including
member of Amicus Committee and
course planner for seminar on appeals
- AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell
- Member of Anderson Korzen &
Associates, P.C. for four years, with
an appellate and trial
practice primarily representing plaintiffs
- Associate at Smith Helms Mulliss
& Moore, L.L.P. for seven years,
working closely with former
North Carolina Chief Justice Jim Exum in
firm’s appellate
practice group
- Law clerk to the late Sam J.
Ervin, III, then Chief Judge of the
United States Court of
Appeals for the Fourth Circuit
John is equally qualified for state or federal appeals. In
addition to handling many state appeals, John has significant
federal appellate experience. After law school, he clerked for the
late Chief Judge Sam J. Ervin, III on the Fourth Circuit,
assisting the Judge with more than 50 appeals, drafting 24 Fourth
Circuit opinions, and observing approximately 100 oral arguments.
In recent years, he has made 10 oral arguments to the Fourth
Circuit and handled numerous federal civil and criminal appeals.
He regularly makes CLE presentations regarding Fourth Circuit case
law updates and Fourth Circuit practice.
John works well with trial counsel and their clients because he
has been “in the trenches” himself. He knows firsthand how
decisions are made at the trial court level. For 11 years, John
had an active trial court practice as well as an appellate
practice. He had jury trials in both state and federal court, as
well as numerous dispositive motion and workers compensation
hearings. During law school, John also spent a summer clerking for
the late James B. McMillan, Jr., United States District Judge for
the Western District of North Carolina.
